Australian Jewellery designer Elke Kramer has just launched her new Spring 2011 collection, The Shake of Ophelia, and it’s quite something.
Historically, the story behind Ophelia is a tragic one, and just as Shakespeare’s Ophelia, a girl full of sorrow due to Hamlet rejecting her, Elke Kramer’s Ophelia is a 19th century English rose who flees her homeland to embark on a mystical journey with a travelling spice merchant.
The Shake of Ophelia tells a story of a beautiful girl who was born into wealth and luxury. Ophelia decides to flee to The Orient of Africa and the Far East to accompany a travelling spice merchant. It’s her worldly experiences that make her world abundant with colour and fascinating details, much like Elke Kramer’s new accessories collection, which was inspired by the story of Ophelia.

Elke Kramer’s Shake of Ophelia is a fascinating collection of resin-made gems and supple leather goods that “evokes this tale to honour the shamanic, the mythical and the ceremonial”. The collection is truly bountiful and it brings us oriental, ornamental style accessories and is accompanied with a small range of leather bags and purses.
If you are as mystified by the Australian jewellery designer’s Spring 2011 collection as I was, why not take a closer look at the designer by visiting her website, www.elkekramer.com. The Spring 2011 collection is available online and in select stores such as Urban Outfitters, Collette and Opening Ceremony starting September 2010.
