The Optimus 3D packs a 4.3-inch touchscreen that displays 3D pictures and videos without the need for daft glasses. It's a standard, 2D Android smart phone until you press the 3D hot-key on the side, which opens an animated gallery of features known as the '3D zone'. From there, you can access 3D apps, videos, games and the camera.
The phone comes with three pre-loaded games from Gameloft, and video can be uploaded directly to YouTube's 3D channel via a dedicated app.The Optimus 3D contains a dual-core Texas Instruments Omap 4430 chipset. That makes it powerful enough to handle 3D video recording and playback, as well as all the usual smart-phone gubbins, like fast Web browsing, navigation and gaming.
The Optimus 3D packs two 5-megapixel cameras, set 24mm apart so that they record at slightly different angles to create a 3D effect. You can see the 3D effect on the screen as you record, and you can adjust the depth too, so the effect is at its best.
The 3D effect looks cool under certain circumstances -- specifically, when a picture has plenty of depth. We tried out the built-in games, and saw the character we were controlling lifted off the background in a pleasing fashion. On-screen status bars, like health or speed, seem to hover just above the screen.
The 5-megapixel cameras can capture 720p high-definition video footage in 3D. Standard, 2D video is recorded at a higher, 1080p resolution. The Optimus 3D has an HDMI connection so you can output video to your television. You can watch 3D footage on a 3D TV, but you'll need glasses.
